Amazon Directory Service and Amazon Organizations

Amazon Directory Service for Microsoft Active Directory, or Amazon Managed Microsoft AD, lets you run Microsoft Active Directory (AD) as a managed service. Amazon Directory Service makes it easy to set up and run directories in the Amazon Cloud or connect your Amazon resources with an existing on-premises Microsoft Active Directory. Amazon Managed Microsoft AD also integrates tightly with Amazon Organizations to allow seamless directory sharing across multiple Amazon Web Services accounts and any VPC in a Region. For more information, see the Amazon Directory Service Administration Guide.

Use the following information to help you integrate Amazon Directory Service with Amazon Organizations.

Enabling trusted access with Amazon Directory Service

For information about the permissions needed to enable trusted access, see Permissions required to enable trusted access.

You can enable trusted access using either the Amazon Directory Service console or the Amazon Organizations console.

Important

We strongly recommend that whenever possible, you use the Amazon Directory Service console or tools to enable integration with Organizations. This lets Amazon Directory Service perform any configuration that it requires, such as creating resources needed by the service. Proceed with these steps only if you can’t enable integration using the tools provided by Amazon Directory Service. For more information, see this note.

If you enable trusted access by using the Amazon Directory Service console or tools then you don’t need to complete these steps.

To enable trusted access using the Amazon Directory Service console

To share a directory, which automatically enables trusted access, see Share Your Directory in the Amazon Directory Service Administration Guide. For step-by-step instructions, see Tutorial: Sharing Your Amazon Managed Microsoft AD Directory.

You can enable trusted access by using the Amazon Organizations console.
